According to the police, a 27-year-old Mumbai native was detained for reportedly inventing his own kidnapping and asking his family for ransom to pay off a debt. Jitendra Joshi has been named as the person responsible, according to Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Bansal. The reports quote DCP Ajay Bansal as saying, "Jitendra Joshi, a 27-year-old man, staged his own kidnapping and demanded a ransom from his family to settle his outstanding debt."
Joshi's wife received a WhatsApp call informing her of her husband's captivity and demanding payment of an Rs. 5 lakh ransom. An inquiry was started when the accused's relatives swiftly notified the police. Within 12 hours, Joshi was found, and when he was questioned, he admitted to planning his own kidnapping in order to extort money from his father. The accused has been taken into jail by the police and will remain there until 3 June, per the court's order. The matter is presently the subject of more investigations.
