According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), an Indian citizen who arrived from Sierra Leone and checked into a hotel in Mumbai has been apprehended with 4 kg of cocaine worth Rs 40 crore. Acting on specific intelligence, the DRI team searched a hotel room near the Mumbai airport on Monday. They discovered the illicit substance concealed in two packets inside a travel bag. The accused has been arrested by the apex anti-smuggling agency.
The agency stated that a passenger who arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Sierra Leone is currently being investigated by the DRI. The agency has suspicions that this individual may have smuggled illegal narcotics into India.
The travel documents available with him suggested he carried the bag during his journey from the West African country to Mumbai., DRI stated.
The central agency stated that the accused was apprehended and subsequently placed in judicial custody by a local court, following the discovery of the powdery substance, which was determined to be cocaine after examination with a field testing kit. This illicit drug falls under the purview of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and was subsequently confiscated.
An investigation was underway to locate and apprehend key members of the drug syndicate in which he was involved, the report mentioned.
