PM Modi Meets Tech Giants in NYC, Focuses on Future Technologies

On the second day of his three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with leading industry figures from various sectors, including semiconductors, electronics, and biotechnology. The discussions centered on India's growing potential in these industries and the vast opportunities the country has to offer.

The CEO roundtable included prominent figures such as Adobe Chairman, President, and CEO Shantanu Narayen; Google CEO Sundar Pichai; IBM CEO Arvind Krishna; AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su; and Moderna Chairman Noubar Afeyan. The discussions highlighted India’s advancements in technology and innovation, with an emphasis on fostering further collaborations with global tech leaders.

In a post following the roundtable, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Had a fruitful roundtable with tech CEOs in New York, discussing aspects relating to technology, innovation and more. Also highlighted the strides made by India in this field. I am glad to see immense optimism towards India."

 

The discussions reinforced the strong optimism and belief in India's potential as a hub for technological development and innovation.

Biden and Modi Praise Semiconductor Collaboration

During a bilateral meeting between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Modi on Saturday, the two leaders lauded joint efforts to establish resilient and secure semiconductor supply chains. A key focus was the creation of GlobalFoundries' (GF) Kolkata Power Center in India, which aims to enhance cooperation in research and development for chip manufacturing. This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening ties between the two nations in the tech sector.

Emerging Technologies Take Center Stage

The leaders also welcomed new private-sector collaborations in emerging technologies. This includes IBM’s recent memorandum of understanding with the Indian government to enable its Watsonx platform on India's Airawat supercomputer. The collaboration will foster artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, enhance research and development on advanced semiconductor processors, and provide support for India's National Quantum Mission.

The progress made since the November 2023 signing of a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. Commerce Department and India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry was also praised. Under the “Innovation Handshake” initiative, both nations have hosted two industry roundtables, bringing together startups, venture capitalists, and government officials to accelerate innovation and investment.

 

PM Modi on Job Creation and Expanding Workforce

During the same roundtable, PM Modi highlighted India's commitment to job creation, announcing ambitious plans to generate millions of jobs. "We are looking to create 6 million jobs. India has more than 500 million in its working population," he noted. With India’s young and rapidly growing workforce, the prime minister underscored the country's potential to become a global hub for talent and innovation.

Global Acceptance of India’s Policies

Modi also pointed to the global recognition of India’s policies, which he believes is a testament to the country's growing influence on the world stage. "India’s policy is being accepted worldwide. We are also focusing on design in India. The world is witnessing India’s talent," he said. His comments reflect India’s increasing role in international economic and technological arenas, further solidifying its position as a key player in global affairs.

India’s Vibrant Startup Ecosystem

Touting India’s entrepreneurial spirit, PM Modi lauded the country's flourishing startup environment. "India has one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems," he remarked. With the rise of unicorns and tech-driven enterprises, India’s startup scene has gained significant attention globally, attracting both investment and collaboration from international players.

PM Modi concluded his statements with a bold declaration about India’s future economic aspirations. "India is ambitious. It is the world's fastest-growing economy. I believe that in my third tenure, India will become the third-largest democracy," he said, signaling his confidence in India’s ongoing economic transformation.

Addressing the Indian Community

While in New York, PM Modi also addressed a large gathering of the Indian community, who welcomed him with enthusiasm. Thousands from across the U.S. gathered to hear the Prime Minister speak on the strong ties between India and the U.S.

 Prime Minister Modi will deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow. The Summit, titled 'Summit of the Future,' will see participation from a large number of global leaders.
