MEIL, a Hyderabad-based company, has secured the contract for two packages of civil construction work for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project in Mumbai. This victory came after competing against L&T, a prominent engineering firm. The project's goal is to reduce the travel time from Thane to Mumbai's western suburbs from an hour to between 15 and 20 minutes. It also seeks to decrease carbon emissions from vehicles on that route.

MEIL's bid of Rs 14,400 crore for the two packages was the lowest, and the company was granted the letter of offer. The project includes constructing two 10.8 km road tunnels under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and the approach roads on both ends. These tunnels will feature three lanes each and will connect Ekta Nagar, Magathane in Borivali, and Tikuji-Ni-Wadi at Manpada in Thane. Work on the project is expected to commence following the monsoon.
