Jalna, Maharashtra: In a prompt response to a protest call issued by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil, a curfew was issued in the Ambad taluka of Maharashtra's Jalna district on Monday. The measure was taken by the authority to maintain law and order. Jarange-Patil earlier on Sunday declared his intention to lead a march to Mumbai and stage a protest outside the residence of Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis.
The agitators set a state transport bus on fire at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk of Tirthpuri city under Ambad taluka. The protest broke out after the state government announced the Maratha reservation. The Shinde government has passed a bill granting Marathas a 10% reservation. However, despite this, the anger of Maratha protesters is evident. In Jalna, protesters demonstrating over the Maratha reservation set fire to a bus.
On February 20, the Shinde government called a special session in the assembly and passed a bill to provide Marathas with a 10% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions. It's worth mentioning that before this, Marathas were given a 52% reservation. With the addition of 10% reservations, they now have a total of 62% reservations. The Maratha population in the state is 28%. The government has provided reservations separately to Marathas, whereas they are demanding reservations within the OBC category.
Manoj Jarange, a Maratha reservation activist, said that being given a quota outside the OBC category could pose a legal challenge to the reservation. This is because, according to the Supreme Court's decision, more than 50% of reservations cannot be provided to anyone.
Manoj Jarange leveled serious allegations against Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, stating that he is conspiring to weaken the protests being carried out by the Maratha community. Additionally, the Deputy CM is allegedly attempting to tarnish his image.
