Manipur conflict might be spreading to Mizoram, as ethnic tensions rise

After receiving a directive to leave "for their own safety", following a diktat by an organization of former radicals, Meitei people who reside in and work in Mizoram began leaving the northeastern State on Saturday.

In a statement released on Friday, the Peace Accord MNF Returnees' Association (PAMRA) claimed that due to the increasing tension following the "barbaric and heinous acts committed by miscreants in Manipur," Mizoram was no longer safe for Meiteis. Similar to the Chins of Myanmar and the Chin-Kukis of Bangladesh, Mizos and Kukis are ethnically related.

Unconfirmed numbers of Meitei people are reported to have taken buses and taxis out of Aizawl and other districts of Mizoram.

H. Lalengmawia, the Mizoram home commissioner, met with PAMRA leaders on Saturday to get clarification on a statement that was allegedly made to threaten Meiteis.

“The PAMRA representatives said their statement was an advisory requesting the Meiteis living in Mizoram to exercise caution in the light of public sentiments regarding the ongoing conflict in Manipur and was not a diktat or a quit notice to the Meiteis,” a Mizoram Government spokesperson said.

12,584 Chin-Kuki-Zo individuals from Manipur, according to officials, sought asylum in Mizoram as of July 21.
