The Indian government and Naxalite or Naxal Maoist organizations are engaged in an ongoing conflict known as the Naxalite-Maoist insurgency.
The Dandakaranya-Chhattisgarh-Odisha area, the trijunction of Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as two isolated, wooded mountainous clusters rich in coal, have been progressively losing territory and seeing a decline in violent occurrences. It was only present in the 25 "most affected" areas and the 70 "totally affected" districts spread across 10 states in 2021.
The Naxalites typically target tribal, police, and government people in their stated fight for greater land rights and more work prospects for the underpaid and undervalued agricultural laborers. The West Bengali town of Naxalbari, the setting of the Naxalbari revolt in 1967, is where the name "Naxal" originates.
The term "Naxal" or "Naxalite" refers to the insurgents themselves. The movement has been given the term Naxalism.
