During an event in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the city will be renamed Ahilya Nagar. The decision to rename Ahmednagar is a tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of the Maratha Empire, who was born in Chondi village in Ahmednagar district. This announcement was made on the occasion of Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti, which also marked her 298th birth anniversary.
The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar, among other dignitaries. The renaming of Ahmednagar follows the earlier renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively, earlier this year, following demands from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
