According to officials, heavy rains in the Ramban district caused a landslide, resulting in the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Thursday and leaving over 300 vehicles stranded. The landslide occurred in the Shalgari area, which has been particularly affected by the ongoing rainfall.
This highway is the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of India. The officials have stated that efforts are underway to reopen the road for traffic, but the continuous rainfall in the Ramban-Banihal sector is hindering the process. The Ramban deputy commissioner's Twitter account reports that traffic at Shalgadi, near Banihal, is being blocked by continuous shooting stones and slides, with stranded passengers being sheltered. The officials have advised people to confirm with the traffic control units before traveling on the highway.
