Kochi residents reeling under severe drinking water crisis

The lack of rain during this monsoon season has left Kochi and its suburbs with a severe drinking water crisis. The Periyar and Muvattupuzha rivers' water levels may drop during the next few days as a result of low tail-end water flow from the Idukki hydroelectric facilities, which would add to the already acute lack of drinkable water.

The district administration has been instructed by the state government to take action to lessen the effects of any impending drought.

According to a statement from the state government to the district administration, Ernakulam had a 42% decrease in rain from June 1 to July 31, and the district has been advised to adhere to the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) water philosophy.

A severe lack of drinking water has been affecting many areas of Kochi city and its environs.

The worst impacted areas, according to corporation council members, are Vennala, Puthiya Road, Elamakkara, Palluruthy, and Edakochi. There are numerous areas in Thrikkakara municipality where there is a water deficit.

“There are around 140 apartment units in our complex at Rajagiri Valley. For the past two months, we have been getting very little water from the KWA supply line. On August 28, we got some water, after waiting for eight days. Earlier, we were getting water every alternate day,” said Lissy Mathew, caretaker of the Jewel Lexington Owners Association.

Every Tuesday and Friday, they used to stockpile KWA water and pump it to individual units. They can no longer pump water to certain units even once every two weeks, she said.

In March and April, we used to rely on tanker trucks. From February to July of this year, they had to purchase water from tanker trucks, incurring a monthly water expense of Rs 1.25 lakh. According to A Radhakrishnan, a member of the executive committee and the previous president of the Jewel Lexington Owners Association, the water level in the wells upon which they rely for uses other than drinking has decreased.

The corporation will begin taking steps to educate the public about the water deficit, according to Mayor M. Anil Kumar.
