Kiren Rijiju was moved from the law ministry and replaced by Arjun Ram Meghwal as part of the Narendra Modi administration's mini-reshuffle of the Cabinet.Rijiju has been given control of the low-key Ministry of Earth Sciences; he is one of the prominent ministers in the cabinet in charge of an important ministry.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan declared in a statement that Meghwal, a former IAS official, has been granted the autonomous responsibility of Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his current responsibilities.Meghwal will continue to serve as a minister of state and oversee parliamentary affairs and culture.Rijiju updated his Twitter bio to reflect his newly appointed portfolio after the mini-rejig.
Due to his divisive comments over the past year, Rijiju has recently found himself in a difficult situation with the judiciary. He questioned the separation of powers between the executive and judicial branches as well as the collegium method for selecting judges.
Rijiju described the collegium system as being opaque, "alien to the Constitution," and the "only system in the world where judges appoint people they know" on a number of public forums.
