The murder of 22-year-old house surgeon Vandana Das at a taluk hospital in the Kottarakkara area of Kollam has prompted the Kerala High Court to intervene. The accused, who had been brought to the hospital by police following a fight with his family members, allegedly stabbed the doctor to death while she was conducting his medical examination. Expressing their shock at the incident, a Division Bench consisting of Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Kauser Edappagath has decided to hold a special sitting at 1.45 pm today regarding the murder of doctor Vandana Das. According to a Kottarakkara police officer, while Doctor Das was dressing a wound on the leg of the man identified as Sandeep, he suddenly became agitated and attacked everyone in the vicinity with a scissor and a scalpel.

The young doctor suffered the main impact of the attack, while the police personnel accompanying the man were also injured. Despite being rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, the doctor could not be saved. The accused, S Sandeep (42), is reportedly a teacher at Nedumbana UP School and had been taken into police custody after getting involved in a fight with his neighbours. As he sustained injuries during the altercation, the police brought him to the hospital for treatment. In response to Dr Vandana's killing, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour statewide strike today. However, the strike will exclude intensive care units and emergency wings and is set to continue until 8 am on Thursday, as per a report by mathrubhumi.com.
