As India marks the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26, 2024, the nation comes together to honour the bravery and sacrifice of its soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. This annual observance commemorates India's victory over Pakistan and pays tribute to the fallen heroes who defended the nation's sovereignty.

The Kargil War: A Brief History

The Kargil War began in May 1999 when Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. This infiltration was discovered by the Indian Army, leading to the launch of Operation Vijay.

The conflict lasted for over two months, with intense battles taking place in difficult mountainous terrain. Indian forces successfully recaptured strategic positions, including Tiger Hill, driving out the Pakistani intruders. The war resulted in nearly 490 casualties among Indian officers, soldiers, and jawans.
