Jharkhand reports its first bird flu case with a 9-month-old patient

A distinguished physician reported on Friday that a nine-month-old infant at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in this city tested positive for bird flu.

The infant, a Ramgarh district resident of Jharkhand, was taken to RIMS with symptoms of fever, cough, and respiratory issues.

According to Dr. Rajeev Mishra of the Paediatrics department, the baby's nasal sample was submitted to the genetics and genomics department, which confirmed avian flu.

The girl's sample was transported to Pune, where it was also confirmed. Its study revealed that it had avian flu. This virus is an influenza A subtype virus. There are patients with this infection spread throughout the nation. Many people died from this infection in March of this year. Its infection cases began to rise. The material has now been forwarded by RIMS to the NIV lab in Pune for sequencing. It has also been verified from there. The child's condition is critical. He is now receiving oxygen support.

According to the agriculture department, they had no knowledge of bird flu in birds.

Although the infection instance is concerning, the fact that only one patient has come forward thus far is a source of relief. The young girl is receiving treatment. Although the health department is on high alert, no additional cases have been reported in the state. On the other side, the Agriculture Department is as explicit in stating that they haven't heard of any cases of avian flu in the state as of yet.

"This is the year’s first bird flu case in the hospital. The baby is undergoing treatment in my unit,” he said.

The infant has been segregated from other people and safeguards similar to those adopted in the case of COVID-19, according to Mishra.
