Is a Compensation Scheme by Manipur government for women victims enough?

Manipur's latest move is a beacon of hope for women affected by sexual assault and other crimes. In a landmark decision, the state government has given the green light to the 'Manipur Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/Other Crimes, 2023.' This scheme promises a fresh start for those who have endured unimaginable trauma.

Under this scheme, survivors of gang rape will receive substantial compensation ranging from a minimum of Rs 5 lakh to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh. Rape survivors, too, will find some solace with compensation amounts ranging from Rs 4 to 7 lakh. Additionally, victims of acid attacks, which lead to disfigurement, will be entitled to Rs 7-8 lakh.

Tragically, in cases where women have lost their lives or have been forcibly disappeared, their loved ones will receive compensation amounts between Rs 5 to 10 lakh. This financial support aims to alleviate some of the suffering caused by these heinous crimes.

The scope of this scheme extends to victims and their dependents who have endured losses or injuries as a direct consequence of the committed offence and are in need of rehabilitation. The Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MALSA) or District Legal Services Authority will oversee the distribution of compensation to deserving women victims or their dependents, ensuring that justice is not only served but also that the path to healing is paved. This forward-thinking initiative by the Manipur government reaffirms the commitment to the safety and well-being of women in the state.
