The long-delayed Census 2021 is now projected to start in 2025. The process has been delayed since 2020 due to the pandemic. It will provide essential population figures that will guide the redrawing of parliamentary and assembly constituencies. This process of delimitation, expected to start after 2026, is likely to conclude by 2028 and will set the stage for India’s 2029 general elections.
Key Features of Census 2021: India’s First Digital Census
For the first time, the census will be conducted digitally which will allow citizens to self-enumerate through an online Census portal. Although Census portal is yet to be finalized. And may require further pre-testing to ensure both citizens and enumerators can navigate the new system smoothly. The government is estimated to allocate over ₹12,000 crore to fund this census.
Caste Census Debate
Whether the census will include a caste count remains uncertain. The existing houselisting schedule which was created in January 2020 does not include caste. The census data will directly influence India’s socio-political structur. Additionally, Census 2021 data will support the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which designates one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.
Future Census Cycles
India’s decadal census cycles, typically held every 10 years may now adjust with future census cycles following the 2025-2035-2045 pattern. The National Population Register (NPR) remains unscheduled. The ebate continues on the timing, methodology, and budget. As India prepares for the world’s largest digital population count, the forthcoming census will hold lasting significance on social policies and political representation.
