Fourteen-year-old Indian-American student Shrey Parikh has etched his name into the history books after winning the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, America's most prestigious spelling competition, with a record-breaking performance in a dramatic spell-off finale.

The eighth-grader from Rancho Cucamonga, California, emerged victorious at the 98th Scripps National Spelling Bee held at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., defeating fellow Indian-origin finalist Ishaan Gupta of Jersey City, New Jersey. Parikh secured the coveted Scripps Cup after correctly spelling 32 words in just 90 seconds during the competition's lightning-fast spell-off round, setting a new record in the format.

Historic Finish Decides the Champion

The championship showdown came after both finalists survived 18 rounds of intense competition without making a mistake. With neither contestant able to be separated through traditional rounds, the contest moved to the spell-off format introduced in 2021 to avoid co-champions, a situation that famously occurred in 2019.

In the decisive round, contestants were given 90 seconds each to spell as many words correctly as possible. Parikh delivered a remarkable display of speed and accuracy, spelling 32 of 35 words correctly. Gupta, meanwhile, correctly spelled 25 words. The seven-word margin handed Parikh a commanding victory and established a new spell-off record, surpassing the previous benchmark set in 2024 by Bruhat Soma, who correctly spelled 29 words.

Parikh's official championship-clinching word was “bromocriptine,” a dopamine-mimicking alkaloid used in medicine. His flawless handling of the difficult word sealed the title and triggered jubilant celebrations.

Parikh's victory was not an overnight success story but the culmination of years of dedication and perseverance.

The California teenager had previously competed at the national level in 2022, where he finished 89th. He returned stronger in 2024 and secured an impressive third-place finish. However, he faced disappointment in 2025 when illness affected his performance and prevented him from advancing as hoped. Rather than letting the setback define him, Parikh intensified his preparation, studying missed words, competing in online contests, and refining his spelling techniques.

The 2026 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee featured 247 finalists aged 15 and younger who had advanced through local and regional competitions across the United States and beyond. Participants represented all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Department of Defense schools, and several international regions.

To reach the spell-off, Parikh correctly spelled “Philepitta,” while Gupta advanced by spelling “Ertebolle.” Their flawless performances throughout the traditional rounds created one of the most competitive finals in recent memory.

The championship battle also highlighted the extraordinary depth of talent among Indian-origin contestants, who once again dominated the latter stages of the competition.
