The Indian Air Force has announced a major order for 100 more made-in-India LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, in a bid to boost the indigenous aerospace sector. Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari announced plans to buy 100 more made-in-India LCA Mark 1A fighter jets in an exclusive interview with ANI, shortly after receiving the first C-295 transport aircraft in Spain.
According to the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) plans, these aircraft, which are made in India, will be the replacement for the MiG- series fighter jets in the IAF's fleet. The IAF's plans have been communicated to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and all other relevant elements of the National Security Establishment (NSE).
Last month, the Chief of the Indian Air Force (COAS) held a review meeting with all stakeholders, including Haryana-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). At that time, it was decided to purchase around 100 additional aircraft.
In the next 15 years, the IAF is projected to have 40 LCA aircraft, 180-240 LCA Mark- 1A aircraft and at least 120-120 LCA Mark- 2 aircraft. The last order was for 83 aircraft. The first aircraft will be delivered to the IAF around February 2024. The latest generation of Tejas aircraft is the LCA Mark 1A.
