India's rank drops in the World Press Freedom Index, 161 out of 180 countries

The latest report from global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) shows that India's press freedom ranking has fallen to 161 out of 180 countries in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index. In contrast, Pakistan has improved and is now ranked 150, while Sri Lanka has made significant progress and is now ranked 135th, up from its 146th position in 2022. Norway, Ireland, and Denmark hold the first three positions in the press freedom ranking, whereas Vietnam, China, and North Korea are placed in the bottom three.

RSF is an international non-governmental organization that operates from Paris with the aim of defending and promoting media freedom. Its yearly World Press Freedom Index is intended to evaluate the degree of press freedom in 180 countries and territories in the previous calendar year. According to RSF, press freedom is defined as the ability of journalists, both individually and collectively, to select, produce, and disseminate news in the public interest independently of political, economic, legal, and social interference and without any threats to their physical and mental safety.
