New Delhi: Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has been appointed as the next Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS), the Indian Navy announced on Sunday.
Tripathi, currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of Western Naval Command, will succeed Vice Admiral R. Hari Kumar, who is set to retire later this month.
The announcement comes on the same day as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the ranks in the Indian Navy will be renamed as per Indian culture. While the specific new ranks haven't been announced yet, the move is seen as an effort to further indigenize the armed forces.
Vice Admiral Tripathi has a distinguished career spanning over three decades, having commanded various ships and formations at sea and ashore. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, and holds a Master's degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras.
Tripathi's appointment as the next VCNS is a significant one, as he will be responsible for assisting the Chief of Naval Staff in overseeing the overall operations and administration of the Indian Navy. He will also play a key role in shaping the future of the Navy, particularly in the context of the government's focus on indigenization and modernization.
