India's next-gen missile 'Akash-NG' soars in successful test

Friday: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha at 1030 hrs on January 12, 2024. The missile is designed to intercept high-speed, agile aerial threats.

A flight test was conducted against a high-speed unmanned aerial target at a low altitude, confirming the functioning of the complete weapon system consisting of the missile with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency Seeker, Launcher, Multi-Function Radar and Command, Control & Communication system. During the flight test, the missile successfully intercepted the target and destroyed it, validating the weapon system's functionality.

The weapon system, which included the missile, an indigenously developed radio frequency seeker, launcher, multi-function radar, and a command, control, and communication system, ran smoothly. The success of the AKASH-NG system was confirmed by data collected from numerous radars, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems deployed at ITR.

Senior officials from the DRDO, IAF, BDL, and BEL were present to witness the flight test. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has complimented the collaborative efforts of DRDO, IAF, PSUs, and industry, emphasising the significant improvement in the country's air defence capabilities.
