India has emerged as the world’s largest rice producer, moving ahead of China after years of trailing behind.
The country now accounts for over 28 percent of global rice production, marking a major shift in agricultural rankings.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), India’s rice output reached 152 million metric tonnes in December 2025, surpassing China’s 146 million metric tonnes.
