Heavy Rain in Chennai Causes Waterlogging, School Closures, and More Showers Expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a bulletin stating that Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu will experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning today. As a result, schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts, as well as schools and colleges in Thiruvallur, have declared a holiday for the day.

On Wednesday, heavy rain caused flooding in low-lying areas of Chennai and other districts in Tamil Nadu. Streets in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur were flooded with knee-deep water, leading to massive traffic jams. While the rainwater has receded in some areas, a few pockets in Chennai remain waterlogged due to fresh downpours this morning.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan explained that the slow drainage of rainwater is due to the limited outlets for water to flow out to the sea and other waterways. He stated that most of the lakes in Chennai are full, so authorities are strategically releasing water. The Chennai Corporation has also prepared 162 relief centres across the city and is ready to distribute food and handle rain-related accidents and illnesses.

The IMD's latest bulletin indicates that a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea is expected to move west-northwestward and develop into a depression over the Bay of Bengal today. It is then likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on December 2. In response to the cyclone warning, five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Chennai, Chengalpet, and Villupuram districts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has directed officials, ministers, MLAs, and local body representatives to provide necessary assistance to people affected by the heavy rain in Tamil Nadu. The IMD has also forecasted rain and thunderstorm activity in other southern states and Union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karaikal, until December 4.
