The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Limited (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) have been instructed by the government to start selling tomatoes for a retail price of Rs 50 per kilogram from today, i.e. 15 August. This measure aims to lower the cost of tomatoes and increase public access to them.
The decision is a reaction to the market's escalating tomato prices. Tomatoes are now being sold in some regions of the country for about Rs 70 per kg after weeks of gradually rising prices.
Initially set at Rs. 90 per kg, the retail price of tomatoes purchased by NCCF and NAFED was later dropped to Rs. 80 per kg starting on July 16 and then further to Rs. 70 per kg starting on July 20. The consumers will gain even more from the most recent price cut to Rs. 50 per kg.
