Gas Leak Suspected at Chennai School, Dozens of Students Hospitalized

In a suspected Gas leak incident, several students from a school in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, were rushed to the hospital on Friday. They suffered  from symptoms including dizziness, throat irritation, and difficulty in breathing. Which sparked concerns among parents and the school community. The incident led to panic on the school premises as students and some teachers experienced symptoms such as nausea, eye irritation. One student reported, "Some of us had to rush out of the classroom for fresh air, and a few even fainted." The school quickly arranged ambulances to transport affected students to nearby hospitals.

Investigation by NDRF and Police Underway

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived at the scene to investigate the cause of the symptoms. Initial examinations ruled out the school’s chemistry lab and air conditioning units. According to NDRF Commander A.K. Chauhan, “We cannot tell the exact cause of the gas leak yet; we are investigating all possibilities.”

Concerns Over Nearby Industrial Area

The school is located in North Chennai, an area known for its concentration of chemical factories and refineries, raising speculation about an external chemical source. Previous incidents in the area have involved ammonia leaks, and local authorities are testing air samples from the school to confirm the chemical involved in this incident. As of now, students who were hospitalized are reported to be in stable condition, and officials continue to investigate all possible causes behind this incident.
