Former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana Dies After Alleged Attack by Villagers in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur

What began as a visit to a stone crusher site ended in death. Former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana has died after being allegedly attacked by a group of villagers in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, in a dispute over the reopening of a crusher plant and a mining lease that locals have been protesting for about two years.

What happened on Sunday night

The attack took place on Sunday night in Bhonda (also spelt Bhaunda) village, under the Weir police station area. Circle Officer Neeraj Bhardwaj said Bhadana had gone to the crusher site when a confrontation broke out, and that he and his associate Gagan Sharma were allegedly attacked with sticks and stones.

Hospital staff at the Weir Sub-District Hospital said the two were brought in at about 8:15 pm. After initial treatment, they were referred to other hospitals. Bhadana died at Jaipur’s SMS Hospital late on Sunday night. Gagan Sharma, who is described in some accounts as his bodyguard, was also injured.

What the dispute was about

The row centres on a crusher plant and a mining lease linked to Bhadana’s wife. Villagers have accused him of using village pastureland for the project, and mining in the area has been a source of tension for about two years. Police said villagers had accused him of encroaching on grazing land and engaging in illegal mining.

Accounts of the incident say the plant had court permission to restart, but that its reopening angered villagers and led to the deadly clash. These are allegations from villagers and police accounts, and we have not seen a response from Bhadana’s family.

What the police are doing

Police are searching for those involved and have been carrying out raids to arrest the attackers. Bhadana’s body was kept in the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. We have not seen any report of arrests, an FIR number, or the names of the accused, and we will add those details once police confirm them. Villagers are said to be continuing their protest against the mining lease and the crusher plant.

A death that raises bigger questions

The case touches several sensitive issues at once: a dispute over village grazing land, mining and crusher operations in a district where locals have long complained about them, and a fatal attack on a former legislator. Those questions are for the investigation and the courts to answer, and nothing we have seen establishes who was responsible for what. We have not seen a statement from the BJP or the Rajasthan government yet.

What happens next

The post-mortem findings, an FIR, and any arrests are the next things to watch, along with any response from political leaders and from Bhadana’s family.
