In an effort to resolve the ongoing standoff with protesting farmers, the Indian government has unveiled guaranteed support prices for key crops, including pulses, corn, and cotton. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal revealed the initiative following week-long clashes between security forces and farmers, who are demanding higher prices for nearly two dozen crops.
Marathon Talks Followed as Farmers' Unions Consider the Government's Proposal
After intense discussions with farmers' unions, the government proposed five-year contracts for a minimum support price for those who diversify their crops. The targeted crops include pigeon peas, black matpe, red lentils, and corn. Goyal emphasised that cooperative groups promoted by the government would purchase the produce with no quantity limits. A similar price guarantee is extended to farmers diversifying into cotton production.

Potential Benefits of Crop Diversification to the Water Table and Import Reduction
Encouraging farmers to switch from water-intensive crops like rice and wheat to pulses could prove beneficial for India's depleting water table. Additionally, this shift aligns with the goal of reducing imports of pulses, as India is the world's largest importer of these crops. The proposal aims to address concerns related to the increasing prices of pigeon peas and black matpe.
