A farmer from Maharashtra's Pune made headlines by claiming to have earned more than Rs 2.8 crore from tomato sales in the midst of skyrocketing tomato prices nationally. With a current supply of over 4,000 crates of tomatoes, Ishwar Gayakar and his wife, who are from Pune's Junnar taluka, have set an ambitious goal of achieving Rs 3.5 crore.
Gayakar stressed that his achievement did not happen rapidly while thinking back on his many years of hard work. He's been growing tomatoes on his 12-acre farm for the past six or seven years, and despite setbacks and losses, he persevered. In spite of suffering a loss of roughly Rs 18–20 lakh in 2021, Gayakar persisted and continued his pursuit.
Gayakar revealed that he cultivated tomatoes on 12 acres and sold over 17,000 crates for prices ranging from Rs 770 to Rs 2,311. He has made Rs 2.8 crore thus far, and he expects to make roughly Rs 3.5 crore from the 3,000 to 4,000 crates of remaining stock.
Gayakar explained that although he had previously planned on selling tomatoes for roughly Rs 30 per kilogram, this season it has been highly profitable for him.
