Mumbai is gearing up to introduce its electric water taxis this December, which could be a significant boost to the city's transportation options. These eco-friendly boats, powered by batteries, will not only provide convenient travel but also play a crucial role in preserving the environment.
According to the latest news about the new water taxis, they will run between Mumbai's famous Gateway of India in South Mumbai and Belapur in Navi Mumbai. These electric taxis will be available for people who live in the area and for visitors who need to travel. These water taxis can go as fast as 12 nautical miles, and the trip from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai will take about one hour.
Reportedly, a private company called Infinity Harbour Services has acquired the water taxis. They have purchased four of these boats, each costing around ₹2.5 crore. According to an Indian Express report, Sohel Kazani, the managing partner at Infinity Harbour Services, mentioned that two of the water taxis, which can carry 24 passengers, are currently being tested in Goa, while the other two, with seating for six, are undergoing trials in Kochi.
Furthermore, these electric water taxis can run continuously for four hours on a single charge. In contrast, the existing diesel-powered water taxis and ferries in Mumbai consume 140 litres of fuel for a one-hour trip. Consequently, these upcoming water taxis will substantially reduce both costs and pollution levels.
