Election Commission Shifts Mizoram Election Counting from Dec 3 to Dec 4

On Friday, The Mizoram Assembly polls results, initially scheduled for Sunday (December 3), will now be declared on Monday (December 4) due to the Election Commission's decision to defer the vote counting.

The counting in Mizoram on 3rd December aligned with the process in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, where assembly polls occurred between November 7 and 30.

However, EC confirmed that the counting of votes in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana will proceed as originally scheduled on Sunday.

Why reschedule?

The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), comprising 15 major churches, urged people to pray during church services. This collective effort aimed to prevent vote counting on Sunday, recognized as a sacred day for the majority of Christians in the state.

Responding to numerous representations from different sections of Mizoram, the Election Commission modified the vote counting day for the Mizoram Assembly Election 2023. The Commission cited the special significance of Sunday for the people of Mizoram as the reason for this rescheduling.

The election, held on November 7, saw a substantial 78.40% voter turnout in Mizoram during the single-phase election for 40 assembly seats on November 7.

Exit Polls prediction for Mizoram election?

The 2023 polls in Mizoram present a challenge for the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), contested by the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), Congress, and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to a poll of polls analysis, a hung assembly is anticipated, with no party projected to secure the majority mark of 21 seats.

Exit polls suggest a significant setback for Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga's MNF, with the ZPM expected to win 19-20 seats, while the MNF may secure only 12-13 seats. Winning 21 seats is crucial for a political party to form the government in Mizoram.

Exit polls indicate a potentially hung Assembly, suggesting that the ruling Mizo National Front and its main challenger, the Zoram People’s Movement, may not secure a majority. Predictions suggest the Congress could win several seats, potentially positioning it as a kingmaker.
