20,000 Earthquakes Recorded Annually
The National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) currently tracks approximately 20,000 earthquakes globally each year, averaging about 55 earthquakes per day. Thanks to improvements in communication technology and heightened public interest in natural disasters, information on earthquakes is now disseminated faster than ever before.
Long-Term Records Predict 16 Major Earthquakes Annually
According to historical data dating back to 1900, the Earth typically experiences around 16 major earthquakes per year. This includes 15 earthquakes with magnitudes in the range of 7.0 and one earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 or higher. Over the past 40-50 years, the number of major earthquakes has exceeded this long-term average approximately 12 times.
2010 Saw a Record Number of Major Earthquakes
The year 2010 recorded the highest number of major earthquakes, with a total of 23 quakes measuring 7.0 or higher. In contrast, some years have seen significantly fewer major earthquakes. For example, 1989 had only six major earthquakes, and 1988 had seven both well below the long-term average of 16.
