The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recently dismantled a network involved in illegally importing foreign gold via both land and train routes. In a joint operation spanning three locations, DRI teams successfully confiscated a substantial amount of smuggled gold, weighing approximately 31.7 kilograms and valued at around 19 crore rupees, in Varanasi, Nagpur, and Mumbai over two days.
In Nagpur, two gold carriers were apprehended as they disembarked from a train originating in Kolkata, carrying 8.5 kilograms of foreign-marked gold. Interrogation of these individuals led to the identification and capture of two more individuals involved in receiving the smuggled gold.
The Varanasi team, with the assistance of local law enforcement, engaged in a dramatic 3-hour pursuit and eventually captured two suspects and their vehicle while they were on the move in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 18.2 kilograms of gold was discovered, including a hidden stash beneath the car's hand brake.
In Mumbai, five individuals who had travelled from Varanasi by train while transporting gold were located and apprehended. The team recovered 4.9 kilograms of gold from them.
This syndicate specialized in smuggling gold into India through the Bangladesh border and subsequently diverting it to Mumbai, Nagpur, and Varanasi. Thanks to the diligent efforts and coordinated actions of DRI officials, a total of 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with these activities, with five apprehended in Mumbai, two in Varanasi, and four in Nagpur.
