Chennai: In a bid to capture the electorate's attention ahead of the upcoming general elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the ruling party in Tamil Nadu has unveiled an extensive election manifesto outlining a scheme of promises and initiatives. The party which will be contesting in 21 constituencies, shared its candidates list on Wednesday. In a move to restructure the country's economic planning apparatus, the party led by Chief Minister MK Stalin in its manifesto proposed to re-establish the Planning Commission, dissolved by the NDA government, and replace the NITI Aayog.
Additionally, the DMK proposed to facilitate citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamils living across India and take measures to reclaim Kachchatheevu island from Sri Lanka to protect fishermen's welfare as well as national security. CM Stalin also proposed offering full statehood to Puducherry, a Union Territory.

Among the key highlights of the manifesto is the commitment to waive off loans and interests for farmers in nationalized and scheduled banks, offering relief to the agricultural community burdened by debt. Additionally, promises to alleviate the financial burden on students by offering a complete waiver of educational loans, aiming to promote access to higher education without the looming specter of debt. The manifesto also includes provisions aimed at empowering women, with a pledge to provide a monthly entitlement of Rs. 1000 for all women in every state.
The manifesto further addressed contentious issues such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA-2019), with a commitment to its repeal, and the prevention of the Uniform Civil Code to preserve India's secular fabric. Other notable proposals include the extension of the Smart City project to more cities, enhancement of tourist facilities near major pilgrimage sites, the establishment of the Robert Caldwell Language Research Centre, and measures to improve the livelihood of people in Jammu and Kashmir.
Also, The Indian National Congress is all set to announce their Tamil Nadu candidates on Thursday.
