The aeroplane, which had around 300 Indian passengers faced a temporary halt near Paris due to concerns associated with human trafficking. The aircraft safely arrived in Mumbai at 4 am on December 26. It is worth mentioning that French prosecutors, after conducting a thorough two-day inquiry, granted clearance on December 24.
Flight Details and Delay:
The flight had its origin from Dubai, UAE, with its destination set for Nicaragua. Unfortunately, it encountered a delay at Vatry airport, which is located 150 km east of Paris, on December 21. The aircraft, an Airbus A340, finally departed from France at 14:30 pm (local time) on December 26. Regrettably, only 276 out of the 303 passengers were able to continue with the journey, as the remaining individuals sought asylum and were consequently transferred to a designated area at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.
Asylum Applications:
Twenty-five passengers, including two minors, requested to apply for asylum, resulting in a slight delay in the departure. The local prefecture has confirmed the resumption of the journey on Monday, assuring that the plane will depart "not before noon." Due to the passengers expressing their intention to stay in France, some minor adjustments were made to the departure time, shifting it from the initially scheduled 10 am.
Passenger Situation and Legal Developments:
The Indian Embassy in France worked together with the French government and Vatry Airport to ensure a secure return for the passengers. The airline's lawyer, Liliana Bakayoko, recognized the initial confusion and understood the passengers' hesitation in going back to their home country. Two passengers were presented before a judge, later released, and are now under the support of assisted witness status.
In conclusion:
Despite the initial complexity of the situation, it is gratifying to report that 276 Indian passengers were successfully returned. The airline has demonstrated utmost cooperation with investigators and intends to pursue compensation for the considerable harm endured. The Indian Embassy has expressed sincere gratitude for the collective endeavours that safeguarded the well-being of the passengers and facilitated their seamless journey back to their homeland.
