Delhi Bans All Firecrackers Until 2025

In an effort to contain the acute air pollution crisis, which usually reaches its peak during winters, the Delhi government has imposed a blanket ban on the manufacture, sale, and use of all varieties of firecrackers until January 1, 2025. Announcing this on Monday, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that such a ban even extends to online sales. The ban is intended to check the seasonal rise in pollution exacerbated by firecracker emissions during the festive season, particularly around Diwali.

Need to Curb Winter Pollution

"The air quality of the city goes down drastically every year due to so many factors, such as vehicular pollution, stubble burning, and firecracker emissions. The ban is needed in order to protect the health of the citizens. Firecrackers contribute immensely to the pollution load; this kind of a measure will be critical to curb that." Minister Gopal Rai said underlining the need for a strong measure.

It has announced that the government will take all support and cooperation related to enforcement of the ban, in collaboration with Delhi Police, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department.

Protecting Public Health

Air pollution in Delhi sometimes reached hazardous levels during the winter months, as the AQI frequently pierced beyond 400, falling under a "severe" category. Smog emanating from firecrackers along with farm fires in neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana brings together a concoction that turns the city's air into an ecologically disastrous crisis.
Every citizen should act as a pollution warrior, Rai said while appealing to people to ensure eco-friendly celebrations with diyas and sweets instead of firecrackers. To address the situation, the Delhi government is also preparing a comprehensive winter action plan, focusing on 21 important points for pollution control.

Traders Mustn't Suffer Financial Losses

It has, therefore, ensured that the ban on firecrackers is issued well in advance of the beginning of the festive season to save traders from economic losses. "We intend giving ample time for businesses to get adjusted and avoid the aftermath of economic reverses," Rai said.
By doing so, the Delhi government hopes to remarkably reduce the level of air pollution and protect people's health as part of a broader effort to make the capital's air cleaner and safer.
