Delhi Most Unsafe for Women - NCRB annual report

Delhi is currently experiencing significant challenges in terms of women's safety.

According to the most recent report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Delhi is identified as the metropolitan area with the highest level of insecurity for women in India. Remarkably, for the third year in a row, this city has reported the greatest number of crimes against women out of 19 major cities. In the year 2022 alone, an alarming 14,158 incidents were recorded in Delhi, equating to an average of three rape cases occurring daily.

The NCRB report reveals alarming statistics, suggesting a rate of about 186.9 crimes per 100,000 women. It is worth mentioning that the city has recorded 1,204 cases of rape, as well as 3,909 instances of kidnapping or abduction of women. Additionally, there have been 129 cases of dowry deaths and 4,847 reported incidents of cruelty by husbands or their relatives.

In light of the concerning statistics, a senior police officer emphasized the intricate nature of tackling these offences, as they often involve people with pre-existing relationships. The difficulty lies in motivating victims to report these incidents, given the various obstacles they may face. Nonetheless, law enforcement is actively raising awareness by launching campaigns that clarify what constitutes a secure or risky situation, particularly within educational settings.

The police have diligently arranged self-defence training camps for women and are actively converting complaints into FIRs. The rise in reported cases is viewed as a promising indication of increased awareness and confidence in the legal system. As per the officer, this upsurge suggests a decrease in unreported incidents, as more women now feel empowered to come forward and file complaints.

In addition to crimes against women, the report brings attention to a concerning increase in criminal activities overall. There has been a rise in crimes against senior citizens, with the number of cases increasing from 1,166 in 2021 to 1,313 in 2022. The occurrence of cybercrime has also doubled, going from 345 cases to 685, indicating a growing threat in the digital realm. Furthermore, the city has recorded 501 murder cases and 106 instances of human trafficking, with a noticeable imbalance in the gender of trafficked minors.

In conclusion, it is crucial for Delhi to prioritize the safety of its women. The data highlights the immediate need for extensive action to tackle not just crimes targeting women, but also a wide range of criminal activities impacting different groups.
