The north-eastern state of Manipur has been plagued by ethnic riots, and the chief minister of that region, N Biren Singh, announced on Sunday that security forces had killed close to 40 armed terrorists who were torching homes and shooting at residents.
Furthermore, police authorities said on Sunday that since the early morning hours, there have been at least two cases of shooting at people and battles between militants and security officers that have resulted in 12 injuries.
One person was killed and another was injured by bullets after being shot by alleged Kuki militants at Phayeng in Imphal West district, according to police authorities.
On Sunday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters that the recent fighting was between Kuki insurgents and security personnel rather than between rival groups.
"In retaliatory and defensive operations against these terrorist groups who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 30 of these terrorists have been killed in different areas. A few have also been arrested by the security forces,” said CM N Biren Singh. Army Chief General Manoj Pande met with Singh earlier in the day to review the state of Manipur's security and the measures the Army is doing to bring about peace.
"According to our information, firing has been reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West and YKPI in Kangpokpi," the official said.
The officer said that there was another unverified allegation of a Meitei gang stealing weapons from the Kakching police station.
