The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken action against an organization called the 'World Congress of Psychologists' for promoting illegal conversion therapy training for the LGBTQIA+ community. The DCW noticed an advertisement on social media that listed homosexuality, lesbianism, and transvestism as psychosomatic disorders, which is incorrect and harmful.
The DCW has issued a notice to the National Medical Commission, urging them to investigate the matter and take action against the harmful practice. They have cited a 2021 judgment by the Madras High Court, which prohibits any attempts to medically "cure" or change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The National Medical Commission has also declared conversion therapy illegal and banned the practice under Indian Medical Council Regulations.
Despite the legal rulings against conversion therapy, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has expressed concern that it still exists and is being promoted. To address this issue, the DCW has requested an inquiry report from the National Medical Commission to determine whether the program has been conducted, and what action has been taken against the organization responsible. The DCW has also requested a copy of the guidelines or advisories issued by the National Medical Commission regarding the conversion therapy of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
The DCW's actions underscore the importance of raising awareness and taking steps to eliminate harmful practices that discriminate against and harm the LGBTQIA+ community. It is crucial that medical professionals and organizations abide by laws and regulations that safeguard the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By doing so, we can ensure that the LGBTQIA+ community is treated with dignity and respect and that their right to live free from discrimination and harm is protected.
