According to police officials, online scammers in Gurugram allegedly conned a resident out of more than 72 lakhs by asking him to review and rank a tourist attraction online. According to a source, during the inquiry, police found that the victim is 35-year-old Akshay Yadav, a resident of Gurugram Sector 3.
On February 27, 2023, a lady allegedly sent the victim a Telegram message offering him a position at an internet company. After the victim expressed interest in the position, the woman allegedly introduced him to two other suspects.
The officer stated that the accused had paid Akshay Yadav between 3,000 and 4,000 for each day he spent assessing and ranking tourist attractions. The suspects have not yet been placed in custody.He was convinced to sign up on a fake travel agency website created by the con artists. As an enticement, the suspects promptly transferred $1,200 to his bank account after he submitted his registration form and bank information, according to authorities.
According to the police, the victim received a bonus payment of Rs. 2.1 lakh for his efforts. Later, they started asking Akshay to deposit money into their bank accounts as a deposit for future repayments with better incentives.The policeman continued that it was already too late when he realised he was a victim of internet fraud.
At the Cyber Crime (east) police station, officers have filed a formal complaint (FIR) against unnamed suspects for violating sections 419 (personation as a means of cheating) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
