A local court in Kolkata has convicted 33-year-old Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, for the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The incident, which shocked the nation last year, will see Roy sentenced on Monday.
Conviction on Serious Charges
In a detailed 160-page judgment, the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah found Roy guilty under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rape, murder, and causing death. Judge Anirban Das highlighted issues with the actions of hospital and police authorities that emerged during the trial, pointing out confusion caused by the Head of Department (HoD), MSVP, and Principal.
Victim's Father Expresses Gratitude
The victim's father, visibly emotional, thanked the judge for upholding his faith in the justice system. "You have honoured the faith that I reposed in you," he said after the verdict was delivered.
Roy's Claims of Innocence
During the hearing, Roy was brought to the courtroom under tight security. Despite being convicted, he continued to claim his innocence, alleging that he was being framed. His lawyers attempted to calm him down as he was led out of the court, during which he mentioned a certain "IPS" officer who supposedly knew the truth.
Contradictory Statements
Roy's claims of innocence contradict his earlier confession to the crime. The investigation, initially handled by the Kolkata Police, was later transferred to the CBI due to concerns about potential evidence tampering. The CBI also found Roy guilty of the crime.
The court will continue the proceedings on Monday, where arguments regarding Roy's punishment will be heard.
