The project involved the creative talents of 80 students from the Government Art College who worked tirelessly over three nights to create intricate motifs on the bridge. The painting took advantage of reduced traffic during the late hours, with guard rails installed for the safety of the artists. Local artisans known for their skilled craftsmanship were carefully selected to undertake this challenging task.

India has a long history of ornamental folk art known as alpana, which is most popular in the country's eastern parts. Using ingredients like rice flour, rice paste, flower petals, turmeric, and vermilion, elaborate designs and patterns are made on the ground or floor. Simple geometric shapes to intricate paintings of flowers, birds, animals, and other motifs, all with symbolic and spiritual meaning, can be found in the designs.

The artists drew inspiration from folklore and chose colours that embodied the spirit of Durga Puja. On Mahalaya Day, the final touch-ups were added, and as the sun rose over the Ganges, the Howrah Bridge was unveiled in all its glory. The bridge now stands as a symbol of unity, tradition, and innovation, showcasing the enduring spirit of Kolkata.

Durga Puja in Kolkata has always been a grand affair, but this year, it reached new heights with the addition of the alpana painting on the Howrah Bridge. The city has once again demonstrated its ability to find innovative ways to celebrate its rich cultural heritage.
