What is Constitution Day ?
Constitution Day, or Samvidhan Divas, is marked every year on November 26 in India. This day is important because it marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949. The Constitution is like a rulebook that tells us how our country should be run and what rights and duties we have as citizens. It officially came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.
Why Do We Celebrate This Day?
We celebrate this day, Constitution Day, to remember the hard work many people put into creating this important document. One of the significant figures behind this is Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who is quite famously termed as the "father" of the Indian Constitution. He was a strong defender of equal rights for everyone in particular those who were badly treated. Dr. Ambedkar's team took nearly three years to draft the constitution that includes rules about justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
A Special Tribute
We are also marking the birthday of Dr. Ambedkar on this day, as he was born on November 26, 1891. There is a new statue of Dr. Ambedkar that would be unveiled at the Supreme Court of India to honor him and his contributions. The statue is quite tall—7 feet. He is sitting as a lawyer holding a copy of the Constitution. Many associate this statue with shaping Indian democracy and claim it as an inspiration for them.
Reading About Our Rights
Constitution Day is not only history related but also about reading our rights and responsibilities. Schools and colleges keep such quizzes and discussions going on for all to know how important the Constitution is in our life today.
A Day for Everyone
On this day, every Indian is urged to think how they can make their country a better place. Today reminds us that we all are part and parcel in making our country a just and equal society. We celebrate Constitution Day: a glorious celebration about our democracy and the endeavors that actually went into building up a fair society where all Indians have rights and justice with equality.
