The landslide is one of many interruptions brought on by Northern India's intense monsoon rains. Numerous villages in the districts of Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar have been submerged under water, and numerous roads in Uttarakhand have been closed.

The Alaknanda and other rivers in Uttarakhand are running close to dangerous levels. Particular concern exists at the point where the Alaknanda meets the Dhauli Ganga at Vishnu Prayag, near Joshimath.
This isn't the first time the Badrinath Highway has been blocked recently. On Friday, debris blocked parts of the highway in Chamoli, affecting the busy Bhanerpani-Pipalkoti Naga Panchayata road and Angthala road, leaving many stranded, ANI reported.
The authorities is working to remove the debris and resume traffic. The persistent rain is making these attempts difficult, though. Using social media, the Uttarakhand police have been actively informing the public about the state of the road.
