In Gujarat's Kheda district, an ayurvedic syrup tainted with methyl alcohol is believed to have caused at least five deaths and two hospital admissions in the previous two days, according to police on Thursday.
An initial investigation found that an ayurvedic syrup marketed as "Kalmeghasav - Asava Arishta" was sold over the counter to about fifty customers by a shopkeeper in the Kheda district's Bilodara hamlet, which is close to Nadiad town
"A villager's blood sample report confirmed that methyl alcohol was added to the syrup before it was sold," Kheda Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya stated.
"Two people are still receiving treatment, but five people have died after ingesting the syrup in the last two days. Three people, including the shopkeeper, have been arrested for additional interrogation," he continued.
