Police said that the owner of the Atlantic boat, which overturned on Sunday and killed 22 people, including 15 children, in the Tanur region of Kerala's Malappuram district, has been taken into custody. He was apprehended today in the Kozhikode coastal region of the district. An experienced Malappuram district police officer verified that Nasar was the owner of the boat. He was apprehended near the seashore at Calicut (Kozhikode). He is not technically in custody.
Kerala's government announces a judicial inquiry. The state administration revealed a judicial investigation into the boat capsize event on Monday. The Keralan government also announced that each member of the deceased's family will get an ex gratia payment of Rs. 10 lakh. A judicial committee made up of technological specialists will be established. The case will also be looked into by a special investigative squad of the Kerala police.
The police in Tanur reported that the boat's owner had vanished. According to Tanur police, a case was already filed against the owner of the boat yesterday since it allegedly lacked a valid operating permit. Around 7.30 PM on Sunday, the boat overturned along an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur region.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Coast Guard, the Fire and Safety Department, the Navy, and local residents were among the seven teams, according to Minister Rajan, who stated this earlier in the day. He also said that an additional NDRF team would join the initiative. "The 22 fatalities have been verified. There were 37 people on the ship, as far as we can tell. The day before, five of them swam to safety. There is no verified passenger count because it was a private boat, according to Rajan.
In the meantime, the Navy said that three naval diving teams from Kochi, each with 15 divers, had been dispatched to assist with the rescue operations. The search activities are being enhanced in close collaboration with state and emergency management authorities, according to the Navy.
