Assam STF Nabs ISIS India Head, Sidekick Anurag Married, Converted in B'desh

Guwahati: Acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force of  Assam Police managed to round up none other than Ajmal Farooqi alias Haris Farooqi, the suspected head honcho of ISIS in India, along with his trusty sidekick Anurag Singh, Pranabjyoti Goswami of the Assam Police informed Vygr News on Thursday morning. 

Haris Farooqi, son of Ajmal Farooqi from Chakrata, Dehradun, is the alleged head of ISIS in India. Anurag alias Rehan, son of Manbir Singh from Diwana, converted to Islam and married a Bangladeshi lady. 

The duo were intercepted at the Dharmasala area in Dhubri after crossing the Bangladesh border. Both individuals were presented before the STF office in Guwahati for further interrogation and legal proceedings.  The  STF in Assam is in the process of handing over them to the NIA.

"Based on the input, an STF team under Sri Parthasarathi Mahanta, IPS, IGP(STF), Sri Kalyan Kumar Pathak, APS, Addl SP, STF, and other ranks were deputed to locate and apprehend the said accused persons who are also wanted accusing of NIA. The team proceeded to Dhubri in the evening hours of 19/03/24. 

Thereafter, since the input was credible, a manhunt was launched in the International border area to nab the culprits. At around 4.15 am of 20/03/24, the accused persons were detected at Dharmasala area of Dhubri after they had crossed the international border," reads a statement from the Assam Police shared with Vygr News. 

Both the arrested individuals have been deeply indoctrinated and driven, playing influential roles within the ISIS network in India.

They actively promoted the agenda of ISIS by orchestrating schemes for recruitment, sourcing terror funding, and executing acts of terror using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across multiple locations in India, the police said. Additionally, numerous cases are currently pending against them for their alleged involvement in such activities.

According to the Police officials, several cases are pending against them with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Delhi, as well as with the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Lucknow, among others. Assam DG is all set to hold a press briefing at 1 pm in Guwahati on the development.
