Until a final decision is made regarding a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Assam will proceed to adopt a bill outlawing polygamy, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Speaking following an occasion, Sarma asserted that the state government supports the UCC, despite opposition to the Code from NDA allies in charge of other states in the area, including Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Mizoram.Sarma stated that Assam will continue to strive alone to introduce legislation against polygamy.
States can, of course, make a decision regarding the UCC with the President's approval; however, Parliament will decide this matter. So UCC encompasses a variety of concerns; the Law Commission is investigating it, the Parliamentary Committee is investigating it, and the Assam administration has already expressed our support for UCC. We want to remove polygamy from the entire UCC while we wait for a decision. He declared that polygamy should be outlawed right away in Assam.
Assam would take "legislative action" to abolish polygamy in May, according to an earlier statement by Sarma. As a first move in this direction, the state legislature appointed a committee to "examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy" under the guidance of retired judge Rumi Phukan of the Gauhati High Court.
It was mandated that the committee turn in its findings within 60 days. Sarma said on Thursday that we plan to introduce [the Bill] in the Assembly session in September if the expert committee doesn't deliver its findings before then. If we are unable to complete it for some reason, we will do it during the January session.
When he first proposed the ban on polygamy, Sarma claimed that the authorities had discovered that many males "married multiple times" and frequently wed young girls during the countrywide campaign against child marriage earlier this year. Therefore, he stated that prohibiting polygamy is also crucial and that the crackdown on child marriage is not the only solution.
