A doctor couple and their domestic help have been arrested in Guwahati on charges of torturing their four-year-old daughter, who they claim to have adopted more than three years ago. The Paltan Bazar Police registered a case against the couple after a neighbour submitted a photo of the minor girl tied to a pole on the terrace in the summer heat. The couple has been charged under sections 307, 325, and 342 of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
During interrogation, the doctor confessed to hitting the child with a hot iron rod and pouring hot water on her body. The domestic help also revealed that she was ordered to tie the minor to the terrace as punishment. The minor was rescued and sent to a government shelter home in Guwahati, but there was no legal documentation for her adoption. Police are investigating the origin of the child. This is not the first time the couple has been accused of child abuse. Child rights activists are calling for more stringent laws and monitoring of child adoption procedures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
