The Gujarat government has made the decision to allow alcohol consumption in GIFT City, a financial hub near Gandhinagar, in order to attract global financial institutions. This move is part of the state's efforts to relax prohibition laws and encourage foreign investments.
Exemption for Gift City Officials and Employees
Officials, employees, and owners working in Gift City will be exempt from the prohibition law that makes alcohol consumption illegal across the state. A liquor access permit will be provided to all employees, owners, and officials working in Gift City.
Temporary Permits for Visitors
Visitors to Gift City will also be allowed to consume alcohol in hotels, restaurants, and clubs that have temporary permits. These permits will be issued in the presence of permanent employees of the concerned company. However, the outlets in Gift City will not be allowed to sell liquor bottles.
Relaxation of Prohibition Laws
Gujarat has been a dry state since its creation in 1960. However, in recent years, the state has taken steps to relax prohibition laws to attract foreign investments. Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the state were exempted from the prohibition laws, and licenced liquor stores were allowed in some hotels for tourists.
