Air India Lays Off Over 180 Non-Flying Staff Despite Voluntary Retirement and Reskilling Options

India's national airline, Air India, recently made headlines when it fired over 180 workers who didn't fly, even though they were given the option to quit and learn new skills. People inside the company say that the affected workers couldn't use these choices, which is why they had to leave the business.

Tata Group bought Air India in January 2022, and the company has been trying to improve its finances and make its business plan more clear since then. An Air India representative said that the layoffs were part of a process to give people work based on their skills and the needs of the company.

"As we have made every effort to support our employees through VRS and upgrading programmes, unfortunately, less than 1 percent of our workforce was unable to take advantage of these opportunities," said a spokeswoman. "As we continue with our transformational initiative, Vihaan.AI, it is crucial for us to build an agile and effective organisational structure in line with our business model."

Although the airline did not disclose the precise number of staff members laid off, sources suggested that it was just over 180 legacy employees out of Air India's approximate 18,000 total workforce. The company assured that all contractual obligations would be honoured during this process.

As Air India moves forward with its restructuring efforts, it remains to be seen how the airline will navigate these changes and build a stronger foundation for the future.
